Bishop’s University was created in 1843 and, in the beginning, theology and social sciences were taught at this new university in Sherbrooke. St. Mark’s Chapel, built in 1857 and located on the site of Bishop’s University at 2600 College Street, Lennoxville borough, is classified as a heritage building of Quebec. The St. Mark’s Chapel is an important feature of the Bishop University campus. It is modelled after classic British college chapels like the ones in Oxford. The chapel is inspired by the gothic style of the 13th century. Its angel adorned furniture, a sign of a certain freedom of style, were quite rare in the decoration of Anglican churches in this era.
